A simple blood test can be taken any time to detect this, and an easy once-a-month tablet or topical treatment prevents it. For both dogs and cats, this same treatment also assists in flea and roundworm prevention. What could be easier?

If a dog has heartworms, what symptoms should I look for?

Unfortunately, heartworm is not easy to detect without doing a blood test. The problem is that if a dog is infected, he or she won’t normally start to develop symptoms until the heart function is already being affected by the infestation of adult worms.

Heartworm prevention is inexpensive and can be easily given in the form of a topical liquid or a chewable tablet. This is given once a month between June and November. Treating a dog already infected with Heartworm is long, complicated, and potentially lethal. This is why we recommend prevention.
